Discovering university with Llanelwedd Primary

On Monday, the Harper on Tour team were based at the Royal Welsh Pavilion with Llanelwedd Primary School, helping them to discover higher education.

With 22 Year 5 and 6 pupils in attendance, the day started with a presentation to explain ‘What is a University?’, where the pupils were walked through different aspects of a university and what they may find on campus. From there, the pupils were given some time to get creative, splitting into different groups and building their own university buildings such as the Hall of Residence, the Students’ Union and a selection of academic buildings all out of Lego. This helped the pupils identify all of the different buildings and understand how they are part of university life. You can see them in the process of their construction below!

Following this, the pupils went around the Royal Welsh showground being 'nature detectives'. Their task was to find an item for each letter of the alphabet with children finding bugs, leaves and flowers. Then the pupils were invited to partake in some course related activities from the BSc Agriculture degree course. They learnt about what crops need to grow; what by-products come from arable farming, and then they planted their own basil plant to take care of. For a different approach to degree activities at Harper, the pupils then explored our veterinary and food courses. Looking at different animal x-rays, the pupils had to guess what the animals had eaten and then explored their own five senses and how this can affect the food they eat.

The headteacher of Llanelwedd, Mr Adam Shearman, commented: “A huge thank you to everybody involved in the pupils day. The children had a fantastic time and haven’t stopped talking about the day with you.

“My son was in the class and came home to research the university and has chosen his course. You will see him in September 2028!”
